Khitomer, Klingon Empire-Since the Klingon government announced its
alliance with the Dominion, tension has been building on the Klingon home world
of Quo'nos as anti-Dominion terrorists lash out in criminal anarchy directed
against Dominion loyalists. Because the Klingon Empire stopped short of
becoming a formal member of the Dominion, Jem'hadar troops have not been used to
subdue these terrorists and the Klingon Empire has been left to deal with them
alone. This ceased to be possible two days ago when Klingon Chancellor
Martok broke his silence on the matter and stated his disapproval of the current
alliance. A noted Federation sympathizer, political analysts considered
Martok's ascension to the chancellorship problematic for the perennially
unstable Klingon Empire because of his history of consorting with humans and his
plebian heritage which runs counter to the Klingon tradition of packing the High
Council with nobles. Following Martok's announcement of the
Klingon-Dominion alliance, violence erupted all across Quo'nos as pro-Dominion
and Martok supporting factions clashed in the streets.
Diplomatic ties
between the Dominion and Klingon Empire were established by the Klingon High
Council without the input of the Chancellor himself. In response to
concerns voiced by Dominion officials that Martok might at some later date
attempt to sever ties between the Klingon Empire and the Dominion, council
members offered assurances that this would not be allowed to happen. The
Dominion is thus particularly displeased by the current turn of events.
When reached for questioning inside the Dominion embassy on Quo'nos, Vorta
supervisor Tallan, diplomatic envoy to Quo'nos, reported that Jem'hadar troops
will not be sent in to quell the insurgents. However, despite foregoing
physical intervention in the Klingon civil war, it is well known that Dominion
loyalists on Quo'nos have been supplied with Dominion arms. Numerically,
the Dominion loyalist and pro-Martok factions are almost equally matched.
The use of superior Dominion armaments wand the fact that the Dominion loyalist
faction is composed of the more highly trained and educated members of the
Klingon upper class was expected to give Dominion loyalists the upper
hand. However, this may have changed following the stunning announcement
made yesterday that the Ferengi Consortium will supply the pro-Martok faction.
Although the
pro-Federation leanings of the new Ferengi Grand Nagus, Rom, are well known,
choosing to support exclusively one side in a military conflict runs directly
counter to traditional Ferengi ideology. Such radical policies pursued by
both the Rom administration and the Zek administration in its later years have
sent deep fissures throughout Ferengi society. The reckless decision to
announce favoring the pro-Martok faction in the Klingon civil war may ultimately
prove fatal to the fledgling Rom administration. However, it may yet be
too early to predict the downfall of the freshman Nagus as Rom has proven
himself unexpectedly clever and resourceful in the past and may yet surprise
political analysts both within and outside the Consortium.
Supplied with both
Dominion and Ferengi armaments, the brutal fighting continues to engulf the
surface of Quo'nos. Conflict has not yet spread beyond the planet to the
outer worlds of the Empire, but some violent conflicts in space are expected to
erupt before the war is ended. With the sides dangerously equally matched,
that end may be a long time coming and much Klingon blood may be spilled before
a single side emerges victorious.
