Ferenginar, Ferengi Alliance-Critics of the fledgling Grand Nagus Rom
of the Ferengi Alliance have criticized the new leader on the basis of his
radical domestic policy advocating equal rights for women, taxation and general
welfare. His stance on all of these issues has led analysts to describe
the new administration as "soft" and even
"quasi-democratic." However, in a surprise move that stunned
even his supporters in the Federation, Rom yesterday cracked down on arms
dealers violating his edict that Ferengi traders will supply arms only to the
Martok supporters in the Klingon Civil War. Rom announced that his support
for the pro-Martok faction would be enforced by government observers assigned to
audit all registered Ferengi arms dealers. Despite this declaration,
significant black market arms trading between Ferengi and the Dominion loyalist
Klingons continued to occur. Rom savagely ended this illegal market
activity when a fleet of Ferengi ships was sent by his administration to destroy
a small space station known to house such negotiations.
The
vessels, sent by the Rom Regime to put an end to the illegal trading on Space Station L-23 in orbit of Epsilon Tarsonis VII, dispatched the hulk and the
ships docked with it in a massive display of firepower. Though their
ideology has led the Ferengi to stand aloof from most military confrontations in
the Alpha Quadrant, the Alliance is known to possess a formidable arsenal and
was once considered a major adversary by the Federation. The display of
firepower at Epsilon Tarsonis was utterly unnecessary and can only be assumed to
be a warning to other races of the Alpha Quadrant not to underestimate the Rom
Regime. Those few Ferengi and Klingons who managed to escape the space
station were picked up by the waiting Ferengi vessels and taken to Ferenginar
where the captives were imprisoned. The Rom regime has declined to comment
on the current disposition of these prisoners.
Protesters
assembling outside the Grand Nagus's estate on Ferenginar agitating for the
release of the captives were violently dispersed by a military guard loyal only
to the Nagus. Right to public assembly was subsequently suspended pending
the resolution of the Klingon Civil War. Reporters from Dateline Dominion
were able to reach Rom's chief of staff, Minister Brunt, who had this to say on
the Nagus's new policies:
"The
Ferengi Alliance has been the irresponsible teenager of Alpha Quadrant
politics for too long. The Rom Administration is committed to pursuing
policies that will make the Ferengi a respectable and formidable power. We
will do this even if we have to drag the Ferengi people, kicking and screaming,
into respectability."
These
developments in Ferengi domestic and interstellar policy have fascinated
political analysts who expected Rom to build his empire in imitation of the
Federation. Dateline Dominion spoke with Professor of Interstellar
Relations Durita Col of Bajor's Musula State University in order to understand
the present turn of events on Ferenginar.
"In
order to make sense of the current developments in the Ferengi Alliance, one
must consider the history of Ferengi power in the Beta Quadrant. Until 50
years ago, the Ferengi Alliance exerted a powerful influence over the world's
in their sector of space. The Federation's expansionist policies brought
them into conflict with the Ferengi as the other powers of the Beta Quadrant,
the Klingons and later the Romulans, fell in line behind the Federation.
The ideology of the Ferengi Alliance makes that organization loathe to accept
such alliances. Thus Federation inroads into the Beta Quadrant inevitably
eroded the influence of the Ferengi resulting in the condition of the past
decade in which the Ferengi have devolved into the laughing stock of the
interstellar community. What we are seeing today with the Rom regime is
the attempt of this insightful leader to win back a place for his people in the
interstellar community, even if this means bucking tradition. Expect to
hear more from Rom before his administration crumbles beneath the weight of its
own people. This man is a revolutionary, and a dangerous one at
that."
For
now, with the flow of Ferengi arms to Martok loyalists secure, the Klingon Civil
War continues unabated. While Dominion loyalists hold the capital city,
many of the lesser provinces have fallen to the Martok supporters. Some
have suggested that the Federation is also supplying weapons to the pro-Martok
faction, although the Federation denies this, hiding behind their doctrine of
non-interference. We will bring you more on developments in the Klingon
Civil War and happenings on Ferenginar as they become available.

Ferenginar, Rallanah
