Federation enters Klingon civil war; Fighting spreads to
Ferenginar
Some speculate that the Dominionis amssing
armaments for a single, decisive strike against the Federation

Khitomer, Klingon Empire-Delta Aurelian II has become the site of the most explosive and violent conflict thus far in the Klingon Civil War as the Federation joined the fray on the side of the beleaguered Martok loyalists.  The strategically insignificant system had been held by the Martok loyalist faction since the initiation of hostilities until, two days ago, a small fleet of Klingon ships loyal to the Dominion liberated the planet with a minimal expenditure of force and took control of the planet's government and infrastructure.  The Dominion loyalist fleet was preparing to leave the system when a vast taskforce of Starfleet warships warped into the system, decimating the Klingon fleet.

This direct violation of the Federation's non-interference policy was addressed at a press conference held by the Federation President's Chief of Staff.  "Starfleet, at the behest of the Federation Council, has entered the Klingon Civil War in defense of the legitimate leadership of the Klingon Empire.  The worlds of the Federation believe that the actions of the insurrectionary force armed by the Dominion constitutes a military coup, threatening the reign of legitimately appointed Chancellor Martok.  In as much as  the Prime Directive is applicable only to worlds of lesser technological sophistication, the Federation is justified in intervening on behalf of the Martok administration.

While facilitating the reinstatement of the Martok loyalist faction on Delta Aurelian, Federation forces were startled by the arrival of a massive fleet of Klingon ships decloaking in the outer parts of the system.  The fleet of Dominion loyalists issued an ultimatum to the Federation warships demanding that they leave the system and surrender the planet to Klingon rule.  Refusing, the Federation engaged the Klingon fleet in the outer parts of the system.  The ensuing battle lasted over eighteen hours and resulted in the destruction of nearly all of the ships involved.  The Federation ultimately prevailed after additional Klingon ships joined the battle in support of the Federation's forces.

As word of the Federation's open aggression against the Klingons and, by extension, their Dominion allies spread across the quadrant, expectations ran high that this would provoke an armed response from the Dominion against either the Federation or anti-Dominion Klingons.  To date, no such response has come.  Since withdrawing from Cardassia Prime, the Dominion has become reticent to engage in direct military confrontations with their enemies in the Alpha Quadrant.  Some speculate that the Dominion is amassing armaments for a single, decisive strike against the Federation.  For now, we know only that Dominion and Breen forces continue to hold aloof from the conflict in Klingon space.

In sharp contrast to the Dominion's restrained response to the Federation intervention in the Klingon Civil War, news of the encounter ignited mass rioting on Ferenginar where the Rom Regime continues to enforce its ban on arms shipments to pro-Dominion Klingon forces with an iron fist.  In violation of Grand Nagus Rom's suspension of the right to public assembly, Ferengi gathered en masse outside the Nagus' estate, agitating for the right to arm combatants in the Klingon Civil War.  When Rom's personal guard opened fire on the angry crowd, a fire fight ensued which left the Nagus's estate in ruins.  Rom himself was air lifted to a secret orbital installation for protection.  "Profit is the right of every Ferengi," said Daimon Chod, one of the rioters involved in the destruction of Rom's estate, "What we are fighting for here is not just the right to sell weapons to Klingons, but the most basic right of every Ferengi.  I, myself, am not even an arms dealer but the illegal acts of the Grand Nagus threaten the rights of all Ferengi."

From his exile in orbit of Ferenginar, Rom requested aid from his Federation allies to help him calm the besieged planet.  Until now, the Ferengi Commerce Authority (FCA) has acted as a self defense force in enforcing the wishes of the Nagus.  However, current levels of civil unrest have overwhelmed the merchants-turned-soldiers.  Starfleet promptly responded by dispatching a peace keeping force to subdue the restless Ferengi population.  With Federation troops on Ferenginar, martial law remains in effect and a terse, and no doubt temporary peace, remains in place.

With the open entry of the Federation into the Klingon Civil War, pro-Dominion Klingon forces have been forced to declare war on the Federation on behalf of the Klingon Empire.  Some within the Ferengi Alliance fear that this may make Ferenginar, its surface covered in Federation troops, a target for Dominion loyalist Klingons seeking to punish the Federation and its allies.  What victims this war will claim before its conclusion, no one can say.  Tonight, the Alpha Quadrant is a region steeped in tumult.
